In a Dec 1, 2006 news release by the Imperial College London, a
group of researchers have put together two molecules found in human
blood in a novel way. The molecules, after some manipulation and
coaxing by solar energy, separate water into oxygen and hydrogen.
The results of this research are profound. The old method of
electrolysis was too inefficient to be profitable. This new technique
seemingly would cut costs and, if followed through to its logical
conclusion, could become the source of hydrogen for the new Hydrogen
Fueled Economy. Safe, clean abundant energy may become a reality.
It may also be just a fascinating technical dead end, but it
demonstrates the wide ranging fields that are just opening in the realm
of biological research.
