A company out of England, Plastic Logic, has developed a process
that replaces silicon chips with plastic semiconductors. It is
anticipated that this new technology will lower semiconductor cost by
90% and open up new portability in computer technology.
Plastic Logic announced that it will build a factory in Dresden,
Germany to manufacture plastic electronics on a commercial scale. The
facility will produce flexible active-matrix display modules for "take
anywhere, read anywhere" electronic reader products. It will utilize
Plastic Logic's unique process to fabricate active-matrix displays that
are thin, light and robust, enabling a reading experience closer to
paper than any other technology. A benefit to the environment is
anticipated as these new flexible plastic screens will reduce countless
sheets of paper now used in newsprint products.
