A recent article in "This Week in Germany" has some startling
statistics on the alternate power source Wind Power. The article itself
describes the
Wiess Energy Hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
This Houston, Texas museum demonstrates various power generation
technologies from oil to alternative fuels and power generation.
Surprisingly, half the information on wind power originates with German
Technology. According to the American Wind Energy Association, Texas
now produces more energy from wind than any other state in the
union. However, even though Texas and Germany are about the same
size, Germany produces 8 times more megawatts (MW) from wind power than
Texas.
This disparity is understandable in the home of the oil industry.
But with the high cost of energy and the real fear of Global Warming,
new alternatives are looked for, even in Texas. The State of Texas has
leased 11,000 acres on the Gulf Coast to Galveston Offshore Wind for
the production of Wind Powered Electricity. It is hoped that
electricity will be produced from this site to power 40,000 homes.
